Luster’s Gate School

Brief History

  • Luster’s Gate school was built on property owned by J.K. Henderson in 1913.
  • The community raised the money for supplies and provided the labor to construct the school at a cost of $1,500.
  • The school consisted of two rooms, 1-3rd and 4-7th grades. The building had no electricity until 19?? and never had running water. There were two privies on either sides of the playground, the boys and girls separated. The school had large windows for light. The school was heated by two coal stoves. The wood frame construction was held up by concrete piers. The roof was metal clad.
  • The school closed in 1963 and the Montgomery County School Board sold it to J.J. Agnew (neighbor) for $1,500. It was converted to a private residence.
  • Thanks to Tamra Oliver who compiled much of this information about this school.
