Exploring the 2000 Structural Report on Historic Smithfield – Worsham

The Smithfield (Blacksburg, Virginia) structural report offers an in-depth look at the 1775 house and the broader landscape around it. Commissioned by the APVA and authored by Gibson Worsham, it remains one of the most comprehensive studies of the property.

Key sections include a thorough architectural and historical overview of the main house, associated outbuildings, and similar structures in the region (pp. 56–60). There is also an excellent discussion of the mill complex and surrounding features on pp. 48–55. The report references a 1901 Bugle yearbook image believed to depict the mill, and Plate 19 features photographs of the miller’s cabin and the surviving mill ruins.

The latter portions of the report are especially rich, containing historic maps, inventories, restoration photographs, site documentation, and a detailed bibliography for further research.
