Sunnyside-Toms Creek Veterans Association Memorial

A Brief History of Our Memorial
On a sunny afternoon in September, approximately 500 residents and friends of the Sunnyside and Toms Creek communities gathered to dedicate a monument honoring veterans that served in the armed forces during wartime.
Just four days prior, our nation suffered a tragedy now known as 9/11. On 9/15/2001, it was only fitting to honor the men and women from these two communities that had served to protect the freedoms we enjoy today.
Honoring the veterans from the Sunnyside-Toms Creek communities started as a dream. For several years, the families and friends of the communities conducted numerous fundraisers to acquire the necessary monies to create a park and raise a monument honoring their veterans. With the donation of land on Glade Road by James and Carol Hoge, the park became a reality. In April 2001, the Sunnyside-Tom’s Creek Veterans Association® was formed. Committees were appointed the tasks of prepping the land, selling hotdogs and bake goods, sewing and raffling homemade quilts, researching the potential names that would be engraved on the monument, and organizing the dedication ceremony. All of their hard work was evident on that solemn day in September.
Discussion began in 2008 to erect an additional monument honoring the men and women that served in the armed forces during the Cold War Era. The Association got into full swing researching names and raising funds for the second monument to be placed in the park. On June 24, 2009, a monument honoring veterans of the Cold War Era was erected.
The Sunnyside-Tom’s Creek Veterans Association would like to thank the numerous family members and friends that made this dream possible.

Thanks for reaching out to us. That is a good question as to which mill is depicted on the monument. Perhaps Jimmy Price knows.
